Be entertained by Captain Tama’s and his crew on this once in a lifetime, most unforgettable experience. Watch the magical ocean through the glass bottomed boat, listen to island stories with typical Cook Island humour.

Leap oﬀ the boat, snorkel and meet the reef fish up close and personal. Or chill out and ﬂoat above the coral paradise.

After snorkelling the crew will entertain you with hilarious coconut husking demo’s as well as how to shimmy up a coconut tree. Their demonstration of 100 ways to tie a sarong will have you in stitches.

Captain Tama’s and his entertaining crew have been sharing their tropical island playground with visitors since 1992 on their award-winning Muri Lagoon cruise.

What To Expect

Your Boat Experience

You will be part of a natural aquarium, myriads of colourful fish and marine life including a moray eel, giant clams, giant trevellay, angel fish, butterﬂy fish, convict surgeon fish and trigger fish. Sometimes turtles visit the lagoon, this might be your lucky day!

Snorkelling

Muri beach oﬀers beautiful clear, shallow water – so it’s ideal snorkelling fun for everyone, from beginners to advanced and if you can’t snorkel, don’t worry, we’ll teach you. It’s easy! It’s such a great way to experience the variety of tropical fish and coral. Just relax and ﬂoat on the water. Anyone over the age of 6 can safely snorkel these waters; while those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

All Equipment Included

We provide the masks and snorkels so you can ﬂoat across the water; observing the magic of the tropical marine reserve. We also have some fins you can use if you want to get around a little faster. And of course, life jackets and other ﬂoatation devices are on hand for additional comfort and safety.

Thank you so much for the awesome tour. Not only were the views were to die for, snorkeling was being free with the elements, lunch was tremendously scrumptious but the Kaimahi were exceptional. The guys not only looked after, assisted and ensured we were alright but they were also very humorous and entertaining. It is these guys who will take this hikoi a long way. Captain Tama, you have taonga / pearls / tangata whose loyalty is to their mahi and this is very rare to fine these days. Highly recommend to my workforce whanau and friends.

Loved our day!

My family and I loved our day so much. Honestly had the best time, the boat ride, the hosting, the swimming, the Kai, the show and playing volley ball top notch. Everything was mean and we think you guys should put the price up because that was so cheap for everything we got.

Great Time!

Now that we have arrived home in Aotearoa I have some time to leave some comments. Myself and my family (4 adults 2 young kids) thoroughly enjoyed our Captain Tama's experience. The enthusiasm of the Captains, the detail in the instructions, the food, the whole experience was 5 star. We had a great time. Thanks so much, will be back again next time for sure.

What's for lunch

The half day Muri Lagoon cruise includes a scrumptious, fresh fish BBQ lunch. After your snorkel we will head to a small island in the lagoon to enjoy a delicious fresh fish BBQ which includes: Fish cooked “Raro style” over an open fire, BBQ bananas (the captains speciality), potato salad, coleslaw, delicious curried paw paw salad, green salad and breadfruit salad with gluten free mayo. Accompanied by seasonal fruits and French bread. (Pawpaw and Breadfruit subject to seasonal availability)

Tour departs at 11am, Sunday to Friday (Except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Good Friday)

Watersports hire

Hire a kayak or paddleboard to cruise around Muri Lagoon. Hourly hire available from 8.30am - 3pm. Give it a try, this is island time!

Environmental Commitment

One thing we are very serious about is the environment.

Captain Tama's makes every effort to ensure our impact on the environment is as small as possible, we even have a composting toilet on the motu and we always keep our boats regularly serviced. We always make sure all the scraps from the BBQ lunch go to our pigs and dogs so nothing is wasted!

Ra'ui

Ra’ui is the traditional environment protection system that involves traditional leaders banning the harvesting of marine resources in designated areas. Traditionally, it was imposed by the chief of the tribe banning the harvesting of food resources for a set period of time to enable stocks to increase.

The main purpose of the ra’ui is to help protect the marine environment and to contribute towards an increase in marine life for present and future generations. There are 12 ra’ui areas in Rarotonga including Tikioki, where Captain Tama's Lagoon Cruizes set up its marine site in 1992.
